Max Hjelm '11 Earns USILA Men's Lacrosse All-American Honor
HAVERFORD, Pa. – May 20, 2009
The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), through Insidelacrosse.com, has released their 2009 All-America Teams for Division III men's lacrosse with Haverford sophomore attack-man Max Hjelm earning a spot on the Honorable Mention squad.
Hjelm, who paced the Fords in both goals (45) and points (58) this season, is a 2009 First-Team All-Centennial Conference selection and led the league in goals and goals per game (2.65). His GPG average ranked 37th nationally.
After two years in the program, Hjelm has moved up to 15th on the Fords' all-time goals list with 87. Chris Anderson '91 tops the career list with 195 goals.
Haverford posted perhaps their most successful season ever with the 2009 campaign, winning a program-record 13 games and capturing their first regular-season conference title with a perfect 8-0 mark.
As the regular-season champion, they hosted the postseason conference tournament and progressed to their first ever tournament final where they fell to No. 6 Gettysburg who will be playing in the national championship game against Cortland on Sunday, May 24.
The Fords earned their second consecutive NCAA championship bid in 2009 and were selected to host a second round game in the national tournament.
Along with Hjelm, six other Fords were named all-conference and head coach Mike Murphy was named the league's Coach of the Year.

Black Squirrel's Historic Season Ends with NCAA Loss to Salisbury
HAVERFORD, Pa. – May 9, 2009
A six-goal third quarter by No. 2 Salisbury University helped salt away a win for the visiting Sea Gulls in their 16-10 victory over No. 11Haverford College (13-4) Saturday afternoon at Swan Field in the second round of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament.
Nationally-ranked Salisbury (16-3) moves on to the NCAA quarterfinals where they will meet fellow Capital Athletic Conference foe No. 1 Stevensen (Md.) University who defeated Cabrini College by an 8-7 score on Saturday.
Salisbury's six goal third quarter was part of a second half string where the visitor's out scored the Fords by a 9-1 margin to take what had been a narrow 6-4 Sea Gulls halftime lead and turned it into a long uphill climb for host Haverford.
The Fords got on the scoreboard first, however, as Zack Cohen buried a shot past Sea Gulls goalie Johnny Rodriguez less than two minutes after the game's opening face-off. Cohen took a feed from teammate Max Hjelm and fired a laser into the upper corner of the frame to give the Fords what would prove to be their only lead of the game.
Salisbury bounced back from the early deficit with four unanswered goals for a 4-1 lead in the opening moments of the second quarter.
The Fords had an answer to the Sea Gulls outburst scoring three in a row to knot the score up at 4-4 midway through the second 15 minute stanza.
Jory Fong circled counter-clockwise from the top of the zone and got off a shot that beat Rodriguez from about eight yards out to his left to cut the lead to three at 13:43 of the second.
Myles Monaghan followed with a pair of goals exactly one minute apart to tie the score. His first was a diving effort from just behind the goalie's right that skipped in low under Rodrieguez' netting, and his tying goal came from seven yards out front off a quick flip from a Phillip Valliant pass.
Haverford's momentum was broken with Salisbury goals only 15 seconds apart in the quarter's ninth minute, setting the score at 6-4 which is how the opening 30 minutes ended.
An early strike from Haverford opened up the third quarter and trimmed the lead to just one. Travis Gregory fired a low shot from up high in the attack zone with Valliant earning another assist.
Trailing by just one goal at 6-5 now, the Fords seemed on the verge of staging another momentum shift but this time Salisbury broke back quickly and began their 9-1 run that lasted into the fifth minute of the fourth quarter.
Monaghan netted his third of the game in the middle of Salisbury's streak but by the 10:01 mark of the final quarter, the Fords were down 15-6 and their season was slipping away.
Desperately trying to get back into the game, Haverford's Brian Fleishhacker ended the Salisbury run and scored twice within 12 seconds to give his team hope.
Goals from Gregory and Fleishhacker late in the quarter allowed the Fords to out score the Gulls by a 4-1 margin over the final nine minutes but the visitor's lead was just too great to overcome and Haverford's season finally came to an end with the final horn.
Haverford's Fleishhacker and Monaghan led all scorers in the contest with three goals apiece. Six different players scored two goals each for Salisbury in the win with four other Sea Gulls registering one goal.
Rodriguez earned the win in goal for the Sea Gulls making five saves while surrendering 10 goals. At the Haverford defensive end, Joe Banno finished with 16 saves but was saddled with the losing decision.
Though the Fords season ended on Saturday, the 2009 campaign was the most successful one in program history.
Their 13 wins was a program record and the Fords captured their first ever regular season Centennial Conference title earning the right to host the postseason conference tournament last weekend. And seven different players earned postseason league honors with head coach Mike Murphy -- whose 64 wins at the school ties him for the most career victories with program founder Dana Swan -- getting the nod as Coach of the Year.

Black Squirrels Fall to Bullets in Centennial Conference Final
--Await At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament
HAVERFORD, Pa. – May 3, 2009
The first time was not the charm for the Haverford men's lacrosse team who was playing in their very first Centennial Conference postseason tournament title game on Sunday afternoon at Swan Field.
The top-seeded Fords (13-3), by virtue of their undefeated regular season conference mark, fell to second-seed Gettysburg College (13-3) by a score of 12-5 on a dreary and rainy day on the Swan turf.
Each team scored in streaks during the contest but it was Gettysburg's string of eight unanswered goals that put the clamps on the Fords.
The Bullets broke out in front with three scores in the opening quarter but Haverford turned the tables with three in a row in the second to even the score at 3-3.
Senior Brian Fleishhacker got the Fords on the board first with a goal off a feed from Max Hjelm in the second quarter's fifth minute.
Hjelm pulled the Fords within a goal of Gettysburg 90 seconds later with Fleishhacker earning the assist, then the duo switched roles 33 seconds later as Hjelm passed to Fleishhacker who beat Gettysburg goalie Zach Furshman to pull the Fords even at 3-3 with just under eight minutes left in the quarter and first half.
The momentum shift that seemed to have swung in Haverford's direction swung just as quickly back to the Bullets, and this time it got comfortable on the Gettysburg bench.
The Bullets, ranked sixth in the nation, scored three times in the final 5:04 of the second to take a 6-3 lead into the halftime break, posted two more up on the board in the third, and then added the first three goals of the fourth quarter to take what had been basically a do-over with the score tied at three into a runaway at 11-3 with a little more than 10 minutes left in the game.
The No. 8 Fords asserted themselves once again, though, to cut into the lead and flame the hopes of a wild come-back.
As the clock ticked past the 8-minute mark, Jason Leeds scored for Haverford to end the drought. A little more than two minutes later Fleishhacker tallied his third goal of the day off another assist from Hjelm.
That would be the end of the rally, however, as Gettysburg held firm the rest of the way and even added one last goal in the final minute to capture the tournament finale.
Fleishhacker's three goals led the Fords in scoring while Hjelm notched one goal in the loss. Gettysburg was led by Josh Reichert's four goals.
The Bullets' win means they receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA championship tournament but, like last year, the Fords have strong hope that they will earn an at-large bid which will be announced by the NCAA on CBS Sports TV at 10:00pm Sunday evening.
Should the Fords get the call they would play on either Wednesday, May 6, or Saturday, May 9 in their NCAA-opener.

Black Squirrels Top McDaniel 9-8 in Centennial Conference Semi-Final
HAVERFORD, Pa. - May 1, 2009
For the first time ever in their program history the Haverford men's lacrosse team advanced to the Centennial Conference tournament final, moving on to Sunday's game with a 9-8 win over McDaniel College (10-6) on Friday afternoon at Swan Field.
Sunday's championship match-up at Swan will feature the Fords (13-2) against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between No. 6 Gettysburg and Washington College.
Max Hjelm's 44th goal of the season pushed the fourth quarter score to 9-6 in favor of the Fords and proved to be the game-winner but long-stick midfielder Grant Firestone's tally with 0.8 seconds left on the clock at the end of the first quarter might end up being the most important goal of the season for the Fords so far.
Haverford held a 2-1 lead as the quarter ticked down towards zero and with the entire bench and coaching staff screaming for a shot, Firestone's long-stick cradled the ball in it's netting as the junior spun away from a defender and he got off a shot from five yards out and to the goalie's left that found the back of the net stirring an eruption from the bench and much of the crowd that numbered nearly 400 in size.
Just his first goal of the season, Firestone's score made it 3-1 and continued the momentum the Fords had been building since McDaniel had opened the game's scoring.
Trailing 1-0 on a Matthew Daley goal for the Green Terror, Haverford's Matt Turnier began a 16 second sequence that gave the Fords their first lead, and one they wouldn't relinquish the
remainder of the game.
At the 10:05 mark of the opening quarter, Turnier notched an unassisted goal -- his second score of the season -- to tie the score. Sixteen seconds later Brian Fleishhacker took a feed from Firestone and put the Fords up 2-1 with his 27th of the year.
Heading into the half, the Fords led 5-3 but McDaniel would creep within one during the first four minutes of the third quarter on a Gibbs Preston score.
The teams traded goals, Phillip Valliant scoring for the Fords and Evan Young for McDaniel, through the midpoint of the third quarter. Jason Leeds' score with five minutes left in the stanza pushed Haverford's lead back to two and the teams headed into the final quarter with the Fords ahead 7-5.
Hjelm opened the scoring in the fourth with his 43rd goal than answered the Green Terror's Mike Hatton score with his eventual game-winner at the 6:13 mark.
McDaniel caused a few tense moments in the closing minutes after Hjelms score, though, as DJ Rickels pulled the Green Terror within one scoring at 5:28 to go and then adding a man-up score with 4:23 to play.
Haverford goalie Joe Banno had come up big all afternoon and thwarted the comeback attempt with a save near the two-minute mark. Banno earned the win making nine saves while his counterpart, Kenny McHugh, took the loss for McDaniel registering 10 saves in the Green Terror's final game of the season.
Haverford, who qualified for their first-ever NCAA tournament last season with an at-large bid, now stands on the precipice of winning their first Centennial postseason tournament and first automatic bid into the national tournament.
Sunday's conference championship game starts at 1 p.m. on the turf at Swan Field.

Haverford Clinches Regular Season Conference Championship With Senior Day Win
Haverford, PA – April 25, 2009
A four goal outburst in the opening seven minutes of the third quarter erased a three goal halftime deficit and propelled regular season Centennial Conference (CC) champion Haverford College (12-2, 8-0 CC) to a 9-7 victory over Swarthmore College (6-8, 3-5 CC) in front of over 300 fans on a perfect Saturday afternoon at Swan Field.
The 10th-ranked Fords trailed a Garnet squad that was fighting for a postseason conference tournament spot by a 4-1 score at the halfway point in the game.
Travis Gregory started the third quarter roll for Haverford scoring just 12 seconds after the opening face-off win by teammate Kiley Norton to cut the Swarthmore lead in half.
Phil Valliant, Zach Cohen and Jason Leeds would all follow with goals over the next six-plus minutes to put Haverford in front for the first time in the game.
Gregory scored again with five minutes left in the quarter to up the lead to two, the game's eventual final margin.
Leeds and Gregory each scored twice in the Haverford victory and Leeds added an assist on Valliant's third quarter score to finish with a three-point game.
Stelios Wilson led the Garnet with two goals in the loss.
Haverford goalkeeper Joe Banno earned the win making seven saves while Swarthmore's Kevin Friedenberg took the loss registering 14 saves for the Garnet.
Haverford held a decided edge in face-offs coming away with 14 of the 20 in the game. Norton was a near perfect 9-for-10 for the Fords. And though out shot 13 to 12 in the first half, the Fords turned that around and finished with a 36-28 edge in total shots for the game.
The Haverford victory marks the first time ever that the Fords have finished a Centennial slate with an unbeaten mark. The highest number of conference victories the Fords have ever posted before in the Centennial was six in both the 2008 and 2006 season.
As the top seed in the league, the Fords will be hosting the 2009 Centennial postseason tournament on Friday, May 1, and Sunday, May 3, at Swan Field.
Haverford will take on fourth-seed McDaniel College at 1:30 p.m. on Friday followed by second-seed Gettysburg versus third-seed Washington College at 4 p.m.
The winners of the semifinal match-ups will play in Sunday's final, set for a 1 p.m. start.

Late McDaniel Charge Forces Overtime & Third OT Win for Haverford
Westminster, MD – April 18, 2009
The Haverford men's lacrosse team clinched the Centennial Conference regular season title and the right to host the postseason conference tournament with their 13-12 overtime win at McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon.
The Fords almost let the win slip away needing a Myles Monaghan OT goal to finish off a win in which they led by five goals with just six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Ninth-ranked Haverford (11-2, 7-0 CC) held a 6-5 advantage at halftime due in part to three goals from Max Hjelm and two from Andrew Kim.
Brian Fleishhacker netted four in the second half and with another Hjelm score and one from Zack Cohen the Fords led 12-7 with 6:18 to play.
The host Green Terror caught fire over the remaining minutes in regulation scoring five unanswered goals -- the last one coming with just four seconds on the clock -- to pull even at 12-12 and force the OT period.
McDaniel won the opening faceoff in the extra stanza but couldn't get a shot off before turning the ball over in the Haverford defensive zone.
Matt Dooley earned the ground ball on the turnover and after a successful clear, Monaghan scored his 17th of the season and only goal in the game for the game-winner at the 2-minute mark of OT. Kim registered the assist on the winning shot.
Fleishhacker and Hjelm each finished with four goals in the victory, both also registering an assist apiece for five-point games.
Mike Hatton, who had the game-tying score in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, led McDaniel with five goals.
Haverford goalkeeper Joe Banno made 10 saves in the win while Kenny McHugh took the loss in goal for the Green Terror stopping nine Haverford shots on goal.
Following the regular season finale at home against Swarthmore on April 25, the Fords will host the conference tournament on May 1-3 at their own Swan Field.

Black Squirrels Hold Off Dips for Narrow 9-8 Victory
Lancaster, PA – April 11, 2009
A pair of Travis Gregory goals sandwiched around a Myles Monaghan score proved to be the difference in a 9-8 Fords victory over the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall on Saturday night in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action.
In front of a crowd numbering nearly 400, the No. 11 Fords (10-2, 6-0 CC) carried a 5-4 lead into halftime but the Diplomats (3-6, 1-4 CC) wrested the lead away for the first time in the game with a pair of third quarter scores.
Max Hjelm's goal with just three seconds left in the quarter tied the score at 6-6 and set the table for Gregory's and Monaghan's fourth quarter heroics.
Joe Banno got the win in goal for Haverford making 11 saves on the night while his counterpart from the Dips, Chris Marcozzi, took the loss stopping five Haverford shots.
Offensively, Gregory's three goals led the Fords and both Monaghan and Hjelm notched two apiece to help the winning effort. Monaghan registered three assists to complete a five-point night.
Mark Hild's four goals and one assist led F&M in defeat.
The Dips out shot the Fords 26-20 but Haverford won the battle down on the turf with a 32-28 advantage in ground balls.
The win under the lights in Lancaster keeps the nationally-ranked Fords unbeaten in the conference and sets up the squad for the final two games of the regular season, an away contest at McDaniel and a season-closer at home against Swarthmore.

Black Squirrels Top Ursinus in First Ever Night Game
Haverford, PA – April 8, 2009
If you build it they will come...at least to Haverford's Swan Field.
Haverford's men's lacrosse team hosted the first ever night game on the nine-month old turf and christened the nighttime with an 11-4 Centennial Conference victory over the visiting Bears from Ursinus College.
The Fords (9-2, 5-0 CC) shot out of the gate scoring the game's first eight goals, four in each period of the opening half.
Ursinus (3-7, 1-4 CC) ended the string and Haverford goalkeeper Joe Banno's shutout bid with their first goal just twenty ticks away from halftime.
Both teams seem to have settled in with the beginning of the second half as each scored three goals apiece over the final 30 minutes under the lights.
The game's opening set the tone, however, and launched the Fords to a league victory that keeps them atop the Centennial standings.
Max Hjelm kicked off the early game run with an unassisted goal in the third minute, followed by Brian Fleishhacker's goal off an assist from Travis Gregory less than 90 seconds later.
David Lawrence and Fleishhacker added to the first period total to push the Fords to a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes of action.
The second quarter went much the same way as Hjelm netted two more, Myles Monaghan got into the act, and Fleishhacker found the back of the net for a third time.
Jason Orlando finally broke through Banno for Ursinus' goal to end the drought and take the goose-egg off the board for the visitors.
Trailing 8-1, though, left the Bears with a too big of a hill to climb against the No. 11 team in the country.
A couple of factors that played into the victory for Haverford were winning 12-of-19 face-offs -- including all five in the third period -- and a 34-21 edge in ground balls.
Both goalies, Banno and Ursinus' Tony Aquilino, came up with some timely saves in the second half. Banno finished with 10 for the game while Aquilino tallied nine in defeat.
Hjelm, four goals and one assist, and Fleishhacker, three goals and three assists, led all scorers in the contest, and Haverford's Scott Kelley finished with a game-high six ground balls.
The Fords will take to the road in their next outing but will continue to play under the lights as they'll travel to Franklin & Marshall (3-6, 1-3 CC) on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. Centennial match-up.

Strong Second Half Drives Haverford Past Visiting Dickinson
Haverford, PA – April 4, 2009
Eight second half goals, which included five unanswered, propelled the No. 11 Haverford College men’s lacrosse team to a 10-3 victory over Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon at Swan Field.
Max Hjelm and Travis Gregory scored three times apiece for Haverford (8-2, 4-0 CC). Brian Fleishhacker, Myles Monaghan, Zack Cohen and Henry Lanier all netted one goal.

The Red Devils were able to end HC’s run when Gruppo scored at the 11:31 mark, but Haverford scored the next five goals for a commanding 9-2 advantage.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – March 28, 2009
The #14 Haverford College men’s lacrosse team had never beaten Washington College in 19 previous meetings. The 20th meeting was the lucky one as Haverford defeated the #8 ranked Shoremen, 8-5, at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium on Saturday evening.
Haverford (7-2, 3-0 CC) used a four-goal run in the first half to establish a lead they never relinquished. The victory puts the Fords in sole possession of first place in the Centennial Conference.
Washington (8-2, 3-1 CC) opened the scoring with 9:01 left in the first quarter when Jimmy Kielek scored to give the Shoremen their only lead of the game. The Fords then scored the final two goals of the third quarter as Monaghan scored off an assist from Jason Leeds just before the five minute mark and Brian Fleishhacker scored 10 seconds later to push the lead to 7-3.
Neither team would score again until 3:44 remained in the game when Josh Perlow scored an extra-man goal for the Shoremen off a Kielek assist. Haverford answered 37 seconds later when Hjelm found Fleishhacker for an extra-man goal with 3:07 on the clock to make it 8-4. #14 Squirrels finally kick Mules in OT
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - March 25, 2009
A late lead slipped away in the fourth quarter at Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night, but the 14th-ranked Fords quickly ended the Mules' upset hopes in the overtime period when Travis Gregory scored to give Haverford the 8-7 victory.
Gregory scored on an extra-man opportunity just 35 seconds into the OT for a game-winning goal that pushed Haverford's season mark to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference while Muhlenberg fell to 0-6 and 0-3.
The Fords scored first in the night-time affair with a Brian Fleishhacker goal but the Mules answered back less than two minutes later for the games first tie score.
Eventually Haverford would take a 4-3 lead into the half and then would build that margin to 6-4 after the third quarter.
Ari Jacobson proved that his Mules were as stubborn as the nickname implied by scoring twice in the fourth period -- for three goals in a row -- to pull the hosts even at 6-6 with 5:58 to play.
Gregory's second goal of the game put Haverford up 7-6 with 5:44 showing on the scoreboard but John DeLuca would spoil the lead with a tying goal for the Mules at the 2:05 mark.
In the overtime, Haverford's Peter Hannapel would win the opening face-off with Gregory earning the ground ball to get the Fords rolling.
Twenty-four seconds after the opening face-off, Muhlenberg's Dan Dugan would take a penalty that created the man-up chance for the Fords. Eleven seconds later Gregory ended the game with his unassisted goal.
Gregory and Max Hjelm scored three goals apiece for Haverford while Gregory added three assists for a six-point night.
Hannapel, whose OT-opening face-off got the Fords the ball, finished the night with a stellar 10-for-17 record in face-offs.
Defensively, goalie Joe Banno earned the win making 15 saves for Haverford. Mike Horowitz took the loss in goal for the Mules stopping nine Fords shots.
The Fords continue conference action on Saturday when they'll travel to No. 8 Washington College for a 7 p.m. match-up between nationally-ranked squads.

#11 Black Squirrel's Men's Lacrosse Back On Track With Win Over Tigers
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – March 21, 2009
Haverford College (5-2) opened the game with eight unanswered goals in shutting down Hampden-Sydney College (2-5) on Saturday afternoon in a 13-3 neutral site victory.
The #11 Black Squirrels got things rolling at the 10:36 mark of the opening quarter with the first of Myles Monaghan's three goals on the day.
Only 85 seconds later Zack Cohen made it 2-0 in favor of the Fords. Monaghan's second in the game came at the 7:49 mark and the first quarter scoring was finished off by Max Hjelm at 1:28 which pushed the Fords to a 4-0 lead.
Hampden-Sydney didn't get their first point on the scoreboard until the 9:47 mark of the third quarter with a Kyle Jett goal.
Hjelm finished the day as the game's leading scoring netting four goals in the win for Haverford. Six other Fords scored one goal apiece.
Joe Banno earned the win in goal for the Fords making 11 saves of Tiger shots.
Haverford out shot the Tigers by a 30-25 margin while scoring twice in their three extra-man opportunities. Hampden-Sydney was only 1-for-5 in their extra-man attempts.
The victory in Virginia comes on the heels of only the second loss of the season for the Fords when visiting and 16th-ranked Tufts University stopped Haverford's four-game winning streak with a 13-10 win last Tuesday.
The Black Squirrels will try to open the conference season with a 2-0 record next Wednesday when they travel to Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg College for a 7 p.m. game in Allentown, Pa.

#11 Squirrels fight until end, but fall to #16 Tufts, 13-10
HAVERFORD, Pa. – March 17, 2009
In another battle between ranked teams at Swan Field, the No. 11 Haverford College men’s lacrosse team lost to No. 16 Tufts University, 13-10, on Tuesday afternoon. The Jumbos built an early three-goal lead that Haverford could not rebound from.
The two teams were pretty evenly matched in all the stat categories; it was just the three-goal deficit that Haverford (4-2) faced in the first quarter that was the difference.
Tufts (4-0) got on the board with two goals less than three minutes a part early in the opening period from Clem McNally and Ryan Malloy. The Jumbos scored again at the 6:25 mark before HC finally got on the board on a Max Hjelm goal with 2:43 remaining. McNally and D.J. Hessler scored before the quarter ended for a 5-1 Jumbos lead.
Both teams traded goals to open the second period, but Haverford made a run to get within two goals before halftime as Brian Fleishhacker scored two goals just over a minute a part on assists from Hjelm and Zack Cohen to make the score 6-4 at the half.
The Fords kept their streak going in the third period as Travis Gregory fed Phillip Valliant to make it a one-goal game. The game went scoreless for nearly seven minutes until the Jumbos went on a run that broke the game open. Tufts scored five straight goals starting at the 3:59 mark of the third period and ending at 12:08 in the fourth. Hessler netted three of those goals to make the score 11-5.
Valliant broke the string of bad luck for Haverford, scoring with 7:03 remaining on an assist from Cohen. Tufts answered right back 11 seconds later and then again 40 seconds after the second goal. HC continued to play hard until the final buzzer, scoring four times in the final 5:32, but it was not enough in the end.
Hjelm led the Fords with four goals while Fleishhacker added two. Cohen set up his teammates well with four assists on the day.
Tufts was led by Hessler’s five goals. Molloy netted two goals and two assists.
Joe Banno made 10 saves for Haverford in 56 minutes in goal while Jumbo’s goalkeeper Matt Harrigan made nine stops.
Haverford travels to Alexandria, Va. on Saturday to face Hampden-Sydney College at 2 p.m.

#16 Squirrels double-up Bullets in battle between ranked teams
HAVERFORD, Pa. – March 14, 2009
In only the third weekend of the season, Division III men's lacrosse saw one of it's first battles between two ranked teams as No. 14 Haverford College defeated No. 11 Gettysburg by a score of 8-4 in a Centennial Conference match up on a mildly chilly and cloudy Saturday afternoon.
The Bullets (2-3, 0-1) looked like they had finally gained some momentum midway through the fourth quarter with a number of chances and a goal by Zach Pucci that trimmed the Haverford lead down to 6-4, but Brian Fleishhacker and Matt Turner scored for the Fords to end the threat and give Haverford (4-1, 1-0) the victory.
Andrew Kim had put his Fords ahead early with the game's first goal but Gettysburg broke back with a late first period goal and then an early second period score to take the lead.
Travis Gregory and Max Hjelm returned the favor, though, by scoring 71 seconds apart around the midway point of the second to put Haverford in front once again.
A Gettysburg score followed by a Hjelm goal for the Fords put the score at 4-3 in favor of the home team as the ranked opponents headed into the half.
The Fords scored the only goals of the third periodby Fleishhacker and Phillip Valiantto edge out to a three goal lead but Gettysburg picked up their tempo in the fourth to try to mount a comeback.
The Bullets out shot Haverford in the final period 10-6 but the Fords defense allowed only four of those 10 Gettysburg shots to get on goal with Haverford goalie Joe Banno coming up big with three saves.
That set the table for Fleishhacker and Turner to put the game out of reach with goals at, respectively, the 4:23 and 2:00 marks.
Banno picked earned the win for Haverford stopping 11-of-15 shots on goal. Zach Furshman of Gettysburg took the loss registering four saves and allowing eight goals.
Fleishhacker and Hjelm led the Fords with two goals apiece and Gregory finished with three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
O'Donnell had two goals to lead the Bullets offensively.
Haverford jumps back into action on Tuesday, March 17, when Tufts University comes to Swan Field for a 4 p.m. game.

#16 Squirrels ground Eagles in local match-up
ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - March 11, 2009
A stretch of 12 unanswered goals propelled Haverford College (3-1) to a 22-5 victory over Eastern University (1-2) on Wednesday afternoon on the Eagles' home turf.
After Haverford's Max Hjelm opened the scoring in the game's fourth minute, Eastern jumped on the Fords to take a 3-1 lead.
Brian Fleishhacker and Hjelm then kicked off a 12 goal run by the visiting Scarlet and Black to dampen the spirits of the Eagles who were looking to knock off the No. 18 team in the nation.
Fleishhacker scored the first of the 12 followed by Hjelm's second goal -- with :01 left on the first quarter clock -- to pull Haverford even at 3-3.
In the opening minutes of the second quarter Fleishhacker netted two more scores then Myles Monaghan and Hjelm scored 13 seconds apart to make the score 7-3 in favor of the Fords.
Later in the second quarter Monaghan and Fleishhacker teamed up for another pair of quick goals only 10 seconds apart to give Haverford a 9-3 lead entering the half.
Hjelm and Dillon Hamill opened the third quarter scoring with goals only 17 seconds apart before Zack Cohen closed out the 12-goal run with his first on the day at the 11:42 mark of the third.
The outburst covered a little more than 21 minutes and spanned three quarters.
Back in the nets for the Fords, starter Joe Banno recovered quickly from the fast Eastern start and made eight saves while allowing just one more Eagle score before giving way to Ryan Herz-Thyhsen and then Ian Holmes who closed out the game in goal for Haverford.
The Fords out shot Eastern by a 50-25 count and put 34 shots on the Eagles goal compared to only 15 that the trio of Haverford goalies faced on net.
Face-offs and ground balls were also heavily weighted in the Fords' favor as Haverford won 21-of-30 draws -- with Kyle Norton registering and 11-for-12 day -- and picked up 42 ground balls to just 30 by Eastern.
Hjelm and Monaghan led all scorers with five goals each while Fleishhacker chimed in with four in the win. In all, 10 different Fords scored. Fleishhacker added three assists in the game to finish with a seven-point afternoon. Jason Leeds also had three assists for the winning Fords.
Eastern was led by Michael Ryan and Ben O'Donnell who both scored twice. Zach Rivest made 12 saves but gave up 18 goals to take the loss in net for the Eagles.
The next outing for Haverford will be on Saturday afternoon and will open up Centennial Conference play as the Fords will host Gettysburg for a 3 p.m. contest on the turf at Swan Field.

#18 Men's lacrosse upsets #13 St. Lawrence in OT
ITHACA, N.Y. - March 7, 2009
Saturday's contest on the neutral turf at Cornell University was as exciting as two top-20 teams could make it with a late goal in regulation and a game-winner early in the overtime session.
Peter Carroll of the 13th-ranked Saints from St. Lawrence University had the fourth quarter score, finding the back of the Haverford net from 15 yards out from behind a screen with just one tick left on the clock to send the back and fourth affair into an extra session.
That overtime period ended quickly, though, as the Fords won the opening draw and marched down field where sophomore attackman Myles Monaghan was able to score the game-winner to give No. 18 Haverford a 9-8 upset victory that pushed the Fords' record to 2-1 on the young season.
The loss was the season opener for St. Lawrence.
Haverford had trailed the Saints entering the fourth quarter but got on a roll and used that momentum to build a 9-7 lead before the Saints would rally back to eventually tie the score with Carroll's goal just before the horn.
The victory was the second in a row for Haverford who will try to stretch the streak to three when they travel up the road to Eastern University on Wednesday, March 11, for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
Late rally give #18 Squirrels 10-9 victory at FDU-Florham
MADISON, N.J. – March 4, 2009
Three goals in the final 2:44 of the fourth quarter gave the No. 18 Haverford College men’s lacrosse team a 10-9 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Thursday afternoon. Max Hjelm capped off the comeback, scoring on an assist from Zack Cohen with 24 seconds remaining.
After spotting FDU-Florham (0-3) a two-goal lead early in the first quarter Haverford (1-1) responded with goals from Myles Monaghan, Brian Fleishhacker and Hjelm. Taylor Hogarth scored midway through the second period for the Devils to tie the score at 3-3, but the Fords responded with another three-goal spurt. Andrew Kim and Monaghan scored late in quarter for a 5-3 halftime advantage.
Cohen scored at 11:47 in the third period for a three-goal Haverford lead. Hogarth netted consecutive goals three minutes apart, but Kim scored with under two minutes to go, making the score 7-5.
In the fourth quarter things took a turn for the worse for Haverford as the Devils scored four unanswered goals over a span of seven minutes to go up 9-7. Hjelm scored an unassisted goal with 2:44 left to make it a one-goal game.
Haverford lost the ensuing faceoff, but gained possession on a FDU-Florham foul. Jason Leeds took two shots in 23 seconds, scoring on the second attempt to tie the score. Kiley Norton won the next faceoff and Haverford promptly called a timeout with 1:09 on the clock. With 24 seconds left, Cohen set up Hjelm for the game-winner.
Hjelm led the way for the Fords with three goals, while Kim and Monaghan netted two each. Joe Banno made nine saves between the pipes for his first collegiate win.
Kevin Shadiack and Hogarth both scored four goals for FDU-Florham.
Haverford will travel Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday to take on St. Lawrence (N.Y.) College at 2 p.m.

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - February 28, 2009
The Squirrels suffered a tough season opening loss at the hands of the same team that ended their season a year before, the Cabrini College Cavaliers. 2nd Annual Nick Colleluori Lacrosse Classic a Success
Ridley, Pa. The HEADstrong Foundation and the Colleluori Family are very pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Nick Colleluori Lacrosse Classic was a tremendous success. The impact of Saturday’s Classic is staggering and far reaching. Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong Foundation’s President and mother of Nick estimates that the Colleluori Classic will raise an estimated $150,000 towards the foundation’s mission. An estimated 10,000 people attended the Classic held at Ridley High School on Nick’s home turf which featured 18 games over a 12-hour period.
In two short years, the Nick Colleluori Classic has become recognized a major Fall Ball Tournament and an even more renowned charity event. It was Nick’s dream to help raise awareness and funds so others affected by blood cancer could have a better chance to recover and an improved quality of life. Saturday, Nick’s dream was fulfilled as 13 men’s lacrosse teams got the chance to do just that. The HEADstrong Foundation recognizes the coaches and members of Bellarmine University, Cabrini College, Haverford College, Hofstra University, Lehigh University, Loyola College, University of Maryland, Penn State University, Princeton University, St. Joseph’s University, University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University, and Widener University Mens’ Lacrosse teams for their involvement and thanks them for raising awareness by selling HEADstrong t-shirts and for their "relentless" efforts on the field Saturday.
Additionally, each of the teams was assigned an ‘Honorary Captain," someone who is recovering from blood cancer. These people were the true heroes of the day. We are grateful that each team welcomed their "Captain" and made them feel part of their team.
Plans are already underway for next year; Haverford has committed to the event through 2009.
For the Black Squirrels, the day began with a 10:15am game vs. Widener Univ., and finished with a 12:00pm game vs. Lehigh Univ. Official scores were not kept throughout the tournament, but the Squirrels strengths on the day were faceoffs, solid goalie play, and transition. Overall, the tournament was for a great cause and offered Haverford excellent opporunities to see where they stand against two strong opponents.

The honorary captain for Haverford will be KC Peterson '08, who was diagnosed with cancer in July 2006 and not only beat his cancer, but was cleared to play lacrosse again on January 27th, 2007. KC serves as a stong message to those who are fighting cancer, old and young, that you can beat it, and the team is proud to have him on our sideline once again. There is an excellent article on KC and the Nick Collelouri Classic at PhilyLacrossse.com.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE and INFO
The thirteen-team charity tournament and clinic will raise money and awareness for the HEADstrong Foundation (www.HEADstrongfoundation.org), which was created to raise money for blood cancer research as well as help those afflicted by the disease.
The HEADstrong Foundation was founded in memory of former Hofstra lacrosse player Nick "Head" Colleluori, a 2004 graduate of Ridley High School. Nick, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in the fall of 2005, lost his relentless battle to cancer on November 28th, 2006 after fourteen months. The HEADstrong Foundation was Nick's creation and the Foundation continues to work to make sure Nicks' dream of ending this disease is realized.
In addition to a day of lacrosse competition, there will be a 1PM youth lacrosse clinic and autograph session professional and ex-college players. This clinic is open to all paid tournament attendees between 3rd and 8th grades.
